How Egypt's Visa on Arrival Works

1. Head to the visa counter before passport control. You'll see visa purchase kiosks in the arrivals hall at every major international airport.
2. Pay in cash. USD, EUR, and GBP are all accepted — Egyptian pounds are not required. Bring exact or close-to-exact change, since counters often can't break large bills.
3. Get your visa stamped into your passport on the spot.
4. Proceed to passport control for entry stamping.

Restricted & Banned Countries: Who Can't Get a Standard Visa

This is the part most travel blogs skip — and the part that causes the most last-minute problems at check-in counters worldwide.

1. Nationalities requiring prior State Security approval

Citizens of the following countries need advance clearance from Egypt's State Security Authorities, in addition to holding a valid visa. This approval can take several weeks, so it cannot be arranged at the airport or last-minute:

• Iran
• Iraq
• Kazakhstan
• Kosovo
• Mauritania
• Somalia
• Sri Lanka
• Syria
• Yemen

2. Nationalities not eligible for Visa on Arrival

A much longer list of nationalities is excluded from purchasing a visa at the airport entirely. Travelers from these countries must apply for an e-Visa in advance (where eligible) or go through an Egyptian embassy. The list includes (non-exhaustive):

Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mali, Mongolia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, and several dozen other nationalities across Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Europe.

3. Special country-specific cases

• Canada: Since October 2023, Canadian citizens can no longer get a visa on arrival or an e-Visa — an embassy/consulate visa is mandatory.
• South Africa: As of April 2022, South African passport holders can get a visa on arrival, even though they're not yet on the e-Visa eligible list.
• US, UK, EU, Australia: Fully eligible for both Visa on Arrival and e-Visa.
